The Grandparents' Basement Table — A Century of Memories Restored

They say you can't fall in love with a table.

I'm about to prove them wrong.

A client originally contacted me about a different piece of furniture. The next day, she mentioned that she had discovered an old broken table sitting in her grandparents' basement and wondered if it was something I could restore.

When it arrived, it had clearly been through a lot. Years of neglect had taken their toll, but underneath the damage were good bones — a beautiful early 1900s design and a piece of craftsmanship worth saving.

The first step was bringing the structure back to life. I carefully worked on the tabletop, turning it over and restoring the pieces back into alignment. After years of being forgotten, the table was finally becoming whole again.

Then came the restoration process: stripping away old finishes, carefully sanding the top, sides, and legs, conditioning the wood, and bringing back the natural beauty hidden underneath.

When I finally attached the legs and stood the table upright again, possibly for the first time in decades, something special happened.

It felt alive again.

With every coat of stain, seal coat, and protective finish, the character of the century-old wood continued to reveal itself.

The tabletop presented its own challenge. To preserve its strength and stability, the leaf was permanently joined back into the table, creating a seamless restoration using careful woodworking, glue, filler, stain matching, and finishing techniques.

The final result was more than a restored table.

It was a piece of family history ready to serve another generation.
