The Tiger Oak — A Century-Old Beauty Restored

Stamped and dated August 17, 1920, this tiger oak piece was my first true antique restoration.

When I discovered it, the piece had clearly lived a long life. There was damage to address, but underneath the wear was something special — beautiful craftsmanship and details worth preserving.

I was determined to save as much of this tiger oak's character as possible.

The restoration began with the familiar process of cleaning, sanding, priming, and refinishing, but extra care was taken with the original details. The drawers required patience and attention, and I was able to restore their function while preserving features like the original dovetail construction.

After the initial restoration, I continued refining the design until the piece truly captured the character I envisioned. A new grey-blue finish replaced the original color choice, and upgraded hardware with detailed backplates added the finishing touch.

The transformation brought out the personality of this century-old piece and helped prepare it for another hundred years of service.

Some furniture simply needs someone willing to listen to what it wants to become.
